Abstract: The study examined six organisational factors (organisational justice, organisational loyalty,
organisational learning, organisational behaviour, organizational ethics, organizational
communication) as predictors of lecturers’ job morale in universities in both public and private
universities. The causal-comparative research design was adopted in the study. The population
encompassed the 3210 lecturers in the public and private universities in Edo State. A sample size
of nine hundred and sixty three (963) lecturers, representing 30percent of the population was
drawn. The simple random sampling technique was used to draw a sample of 30 percent of
lecturers from both public and private universities in the state. Six instruments for each of the
organizational factors and one instrument (Lecturers’ Job Morale Questionnaire) was adapted and
used in the study. The Cronbach reliability technique was used to determine the reliability of the
instrument. The two hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance using Multiple Linear
Regression Analysis. The results showed that the combination of all six organisational factors
(organisational justice, organisational loyalty, organisational learning, organisational behaviour,
organizational ethics, organizational communication) predict job morale of lecturers in universities
in Edo State. Furthermore, organisational justice, organisational loyalty, organisational learning,
organisational behaviour, organizational ethics, and organizational communication had more
effect on job morale of academic staff of private universities than academics in public universities
in Edo State. The study recommended that management team of universities should ensure that
the principles of fairness and justice is largely embraced in all aspects of lecturers’ instructional
and administrative duties. In this regard, issues of appointment, promotion, punishment should
always be based on due process and not favouristism. |
