A SURVEY ON ENGLISH LEARNING MOTIVATION FOR POST-CET-4 MEDICAL AND NURSING MAJOR STUDENTS AND STIMULATING STRATEGIES—A CASE STUDY OF PANZHIHUA UNIVERSITY

Abstract:
With the progress of second language acquisition research and cognitive psychology, more and more language researchers and pedagogues recognize that foreign language learning motivation plays a crucial role in the factors that influence language learners’ language ability. Only through understanding students’ motivation can foreign language teachers adopt appropriate teaching strategies on time to stimulate and develop foreign language learners’ motivation and thus improve the effectiveness of foreign language teaching. At present, experts and scholars at home and abroad have conducted a lot of research on foreign language learning motivation. However, the research subjects mainly cover groups such as college students and primary and secondary school students, and there are relatively few studies on Medical and Nursing students. Therefore, in this paper, the research subjects are one hundred and seventy students in the Medical and Nursing senior class at Panzhihua University. The current situation of college students English learning motivation is investigated and studied using questionnaires and interviews, and the reasons leading to their insufficient motivation are analyzed. The results show that the English learning motivation of students in the Medical and Nursing senior class of Panzhihua University is not strong, and their learning motivation is mainly “certificate type” and “tool type”.
