Abstract: Victor Turner's theory of rites of passage is one of the most classic achievements in 20th-century
ritual studies. The theory is based on structuralism and understands ritual as a mechanism to
resolve social crises from a dynamic perspective. We examine and reflect on this theory by taking
the "Tiaoxiang" ritual in southern Tujia society as an example. The study findings suggest that the
structural tension in southern Tujia society is weak; the procedure of the "Tiaoxiang" ritual
demonstrates the emptiness of "communitas" and "anti-structure". Therefore, this study argues that
the function of rites of passage is not limited to balance social conflicts, but also has a broader
scope of explanation. |
