Abstract: The study of Erich Segal’s Only Love reveals how long and dramatic the struggle against forced
marriages have been in human societies. The author has chosen the United States, France, and
Italy as settings for their richness in different ethnic groups and races. This richness is viewed
through Matthew, a poor American man who falls in love with the Italian Silvia, but rejected by
the latter’s father who thinks that his daughter should only get married with a well-offItalian like
them. Then, Nico who fulfils these criteria is finally chosen and accepted by Silvia’s father.
Unfortunately, this arranged and forced marriage knows a tragic end because of Silvia’s death |
